I’m always interested in the ontology of art and wanted to explore that through the use of APIs. Artworks are embedded in an socio-cultural economy of invisible networks that define its value. By value, I refer to its monetary value and its cultural and historical value. In a museum space, we understand that the works are historically and culturally significant. Utilizing the Art Institute Chicago’s public API, I extracted metadata on the artworks in their collection and used it in my sketches as a way to deconstruct specific value-making factors - the artwork’s medium and credit line.
Users may enter any search term to get a unique “sketch” of words pulled from either the medium or credit line section of artworks related to the search.
